Dwight Howard madness is heating a fever pitch. Will he stay or will he go? Plenty of people hitting the gym a few times a week have Dwight Howard shoulder envy. Its a real thing, look it up. We contacted Evan Haupt, resident shred master at NYSC Hoboken North to give me some tips on how to get my shoulders looking like Superman. Evan is a National Academy of Sports Medicine certified personal trainer specializing in high intensity training, power lifting, body building and nutrition so he knows what he is talking about.

1.    Tip 1:  To maximize your gains at the gym it’s important to have a solid training split.  Break down the week into days 1 thru 7, where each training day you focus on working a specific body part.  Your split should consist of 3 to 5 training days separated by a few rest days. Never workout the same body part two days in a row as your muscles need time to recover and grow.

2.    Tip 2:  In order to look like the king you need to eat like a king!  That doesn’t mean go out and eat a post-workout-whopper and fries, but you should drink a low fat, high protein shake within a half hour of working out.  I recommend whey isolate because it’s a quick digesting protein, which is exactly what you need for post workout muscle growth and recovery.  Consume 1.2 grams of protein per pound body weight each day and you will start to see king size gains!

3.     Tip 3:   Compound movement exercises should account for at least 8-10 sets of your overall shoulder routine.  Add 4-5 sets of Military Press to your routine and watch your shoulders explode!  The weight should be relatively heavy and you should aim for 8-10 reps per set.  Compound exercises use several muscle groups at a time which will quickly increase muscle mass and overall fitness.

There you have it. For more information about customizing a training split & exercises to meet you’re goals, email HauptFitness@gmail.com
