It appears the BCS Championship Game, as we know it, is on it’s way out.  The Roosevelts salute the passing of an absurd era by looking at how the broken system would have affected our professional sports leagues.

Today we look at the NFL. 

As we all know by now, the BCS relies on a combination of team records, human polls and computer selection methods to determine relative team rankings, and selects two teams to play in the BCS National Championship Game.  To determine the BCS Super Bowl, we selected the highest rated team at the end of the regular season from each conference according to ESPN’s NFL Power Rankings.

The results, unsurprisingly, are ugly.

  • Only once did the actual champion make it to the BCS  Super Bowl (2004 Patriots)
  • The system never correctly selected both teams.
  • The Eagles are the biggest winner, increasing their Super Bowl appearances from one to three under a BCS system.
  • The Chargers, Cowboys, Falcons, Titans, and Vikings, all become Super Bowl participants with the BCS.
  • The Bucs, Cardinals, Panthers, and Saints all lose their sole Super Bowl appearance.

Let us never forget the awfulness of the BCS.
