The Roosevelts recently demonstrated how poorly the BCS system would have fared in selecting the Super Bowl participants over the past decade. Today we look at Major League Baseball, and discover the system does considerably worse in determining the participants in the World Series. We again uses ESPN’s Power Rankings as our BCS substitute, and select the highest rated team at the end of the regular season from the American and National Leagues. The highlights and full results from the past 10 years are below.
- Only once did the actual World Series champion make it to the BCS World Series (2008 Yankees)
- The system never correctly selected both teams.
- The system correctly selected only 4 out of the 20 actual World Series participants.
- The Yankees are the biggest winner, increasing their World Series appearances from 2 to 6 over the decade.
- Other notable winners include the Cubs, who sneak into the 2008 World Series, and the A’s, Braves, Dodgers, Indians, and Padres who all make a World Series appearance.
- The Red Sox are the biggest losers, losing their 2 World Series appearances and prolong the Curse of the Bambino.
- The Astros, Marlins, Rangers, Tigers and White Sox all lose their 1 World Series appearance.
