Everyone knows Tim Burton for his dark and twisted movies like Batman, Batman Returns, Beetlejuice and Sleepy Hollow and it is safe to say that the majority of his films are the antithesis of the saccharine world of Disney cartoons. But before Burton was the Johnny Depp-obsessed director we know today, he was an animator for Walt Disney Productions’ animation division.
Burton worked as an animator, storyboard artist and concept artist on films such as The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron and Tron although his concept art never made it into the finished films. He was fired in 1984, but years later, he would return to work with the House of Mouse beginning with The Nightmare Before Christmas. In fact, Burton will soon direct a live-action adaptation of Dumbo for the studio.
With Burton’s Disney connection in mind, artist Andrew Tarusov wondered “what could have been” and drew some of Disney’s most iconic characters in Burton’s signature style. The Dumbo one is all right, but after seeing that Pinocchio drawing, I really want to see Burton’s twisted take on the cricket-smashing compulsive liar.
