In June of 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) seized the city of Mosul in northern Iraq. Since October 2016, Iraqi government forces with allied militias, the Kurdistan Regional Government, and international forces have been fighting to reclaim the city in what has become known as the Battle of Mosul. Fighting continues and so far the Iraqi government and its allies have lost over 800 troops while the US estimates that more than 2,000 ISIL forces have been killed or wounded. More than 8,000 civilians have been killed or wounded in the conflict.
In April 2017, Shoreline, Washington-based photographer Kainoa Little traveled to Mosul to document Iraqi Federal Police efforts to liberate the city from ISIL militants. He was not able to find a buyer for his photos, but still wanted the world to see what has been happening in Iraq.
