Sure, Fenway or Wrigley may have been logical choices too but check back in the next few weeks because they are on the ole’ to-do list.

Oktoberfest kicked off on September 22nd and an estimated 80 million beers are expected to be downed over the course of the 16-day festival that wraps up October 7th. Considered to be the world’s largest fair, nearly 6 million people from all over the world attend the festival. With only two blows of his hammer and a cry of “O’zapft is” — “It’s Tapped” — Mayor Christian Ude inserted the tap into the first keg, opening the 179th Oktoberfest to the cheering of thousands who were waiting to be served their first beer. Only beer brewed within the city limits of Munich, and conforming to strict specifications, is allowed to be sold at the Oktoberfest. The special brand of Oktoberfest Beer is a registered trademark. • The Door to Hell: A Flaming Crater That Has Been Burning For 40 Years [6 HQ Photos]

In Turkmenistan, a nation that borders Iran and Afghanistan, there us an amazing geological wonder the locals call “The Door to Hell.” More than 40 years ago geologists were drilling for gas, dug too deep and the ground caved in. They didn’t dare go into the hole to retrieve their equipment because of the poisonous methane gas so instead they decided to set fire to the hole and it hasn’t gone out since. View Larger Map

  • Looking For An Adventurous Hike In Colorado? Try Lewis Mine in Telluride

The Lewis Mill was built in 1907 and is said to be one of the most intact examples of historic mining sites in Colorado. Since it is so remote and only accessible by foot (4 miles from the trailhead), most everything has been left alone up there. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2001, the mill was restored by a State Historical Fund grant and the materials used were flown to the site by helicopter. The elevation at the mine is 12,448 feet above sea level.

  • 70 Powerful Images From September 11, 2001

Some of the following imagery is pretty shocking but we made the decision to include these images in the photo set because it is the sad and shocking part of history. The term “Never Forget” has become semi cliche over the last decade but September 11, 2001 is a date that we must never lose sight of. September 11th was one of those days that everyone who was old enough to experience it will never forget. 9/11 also happened in a time of transitioning media. There was no Youtube, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. It was one of the last major world events before the rise of citizen journalism.

  • The Week Before September 11, 2001 [21 HQ Photos]

The week leading up the the September 11th attacks on the United States was just like any other week. While most people will never forget where they were on that day, it can be difficult to recall what else was happening in the days just before. I was entering my senior year at Randolph High School but I don’t really recall the events taking place around the world during the week of September 3 to September 10, 2001. Some of the photos are directly related to the upcoming attacks, or the fallout that resulted, many have nothing at all to do with the attacks, but simply show glimpses of what was happening at that time. Gathered here is a time capsule of images taken during the week before everything changed.

  • RSVLTS.com Party At Citi Field

Windows Phone + The Roosevelts said sayonara to summer by taking in one last night at the ballpark. We kicked back in the Delta Club Suite with a few cold brews and enjoyed the last few days of NYC heat as the Mets took on the Atlanta Braves. Thanks to our friends KFC and Brendan (BarstoolSports NYC), Z (CollegeHumor), Charlie (Men’s Fitness), Rob (BustedCoverage), Joseph (Radar), Aimee (BleacherReport) Javier (MKTG), and Chris (KineticSocial) who joined us. A massive rain storm rolled through during the 6th inning so we got to head inside for an extended open bar during the delay. After the game started back up Jason Heyward hit a foul ball into our box and it was scooped up by Javier.

Tonight they hooked us up with free tickets and a photo pass that we put to good use.

  • Cliff Diving In Pembrokeshire, South Wales [22 High Quality Photos]

You’re about to meet a group of the most badass athletes in the world. Professional cliff divers hurl themselves off of 80 foot cliffs, do a few tricks on the way down and land with little to no splash. That’s if the dive goes right. Unlike the Olympics where a belly flop might knock the wind out of you there is no margin for error in professional cliff diving. One slipup and your is big big trouble.  Just take a look at this girl who failed, and that was only like 50 feet. Below you’ll see 22 high quality photos from the Red Bull Cliff Diving Championships that is taking place September 7-8 in one of my favorite places in the world, Pembrokeshire, South Wales just outside of a really interesting town named St. David. Word to the wise, do not try this at home.

  • Floating In Space With Project Gemini [16 High Quality Photos]

Project Gemini (1962-1966) was the second human spaceflight program of NASA and is where most of the learning and engineering was perfected before the United States headed to the Moon. The Gemini program is absolutely fascinating and is often overshadowed by Mercury (because it was first) and Apollo (because, you know, moon.) Here are some beautiful and fascinating photos from Project Gemini featuring many of the men who would one day go to the Moon.

  • The Amazing Street Art of Vitry-sur-Seine, France [21 High Quality Photos]

To the naked eye Vitry-sur-Seine is just another suburb of Paris. But the town of 86,000 has a little known secret. It is home to over 100 of the top street artists in the world. London was in the news this summer for putting a strict ban on this form of art but Vitry-sur-Seine actually ENCOURAGES their creative spirit allowing the artists to use the city as a canvas and bringing them in as faculty to teach workshops in the public schools. Embracing art like a boss. Well done Vitry-sur-Seine.

  • Are 40-Ton White House Sand Castles Hurricane Proof?

The Sanding Ovations Master Sand Sculpting Competition is currently taking please at a beach behind the Bilmar Beach Resort in Treasure Island, FL. Dan Doubleday and Meredith Corson, two master of the art of sand castling, recently created an impressive sculpture of the White House made from 40 tons of sand. The White House includes a clever touch. “We left the front door open because we don’t know yet who will occupying the house come January,” said Corson. The castle took six days to complete are on on display until September 3. This is, unless Hurricane Issac has anything to say. We are unsure if the castle was able to handle the 90 MPH winds of Hurricane Issac but luckily someone snapped pictures of the brilliant creation before it was presumably wrecked by Mother Nature like the aliens from Independence Day.

  • Remembering Apollo 11 [40 HQ Photos]

On July 20, 1969, three human beings – Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin E. “Buzz” Aldrin Jr. - with the help of many thousands of others – left our planet on a successful journey to our Moon, setting foot on another world for the first time. The entire trip lasted only 8 days, the time spent on the surface was less than one day, the entire time spent walking on the moon, a mere 2 1/2 hours – but they were surely historic hours. Scientific experiments were deployed (at least one still in use today), samples were collected, and photographs were taken to document the entire journey. Collected here are 40 images from that journey four decades ago, when, in the words of astronaut Buzz Aldrin: “In this one moment, the world came together in peace for all mankind”. (40 photos total)

  • Behind The Scenes of Roger Clemens’ Road Back To Baseball [20 High Quality Photos]

It’s been a wild week for Roger Clemens. In less than 7 days 50-year-old Clemens signed with the Sugarland Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League, warmed up by playing in a over-50 year old softball game in Houston, joined the team, signed a few autographs & kissed some babies and tonight it culminated with his first professional start since September 2007. The Rocket says his weekend start in the minors shouldn’t be viewed as a prelude to a big-league comeback but it’s good to see him back on the mound. As we did with his old friend Andy Pettitte, here is a look an insiders looks at The Rocket’s comeback to baseball.

  • The Secret Lair Of Hans Zimmer

A brilliant composer is only as good as the studio he works in and Hans Zimmer has built a custom lair that is almost as incredible as his work for The Dark Knight, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lion King, Gladiator, Sherlock Holmes, and many more. Custom everything. Dark and somewhat ominous. A perfect setting to get the creative juices flowing and produce music that has been inspiring the world for decades.
