  • Single Malt Scotch with a Playboy Finish

Generally try to keep my article delivery down to once a week, but this topic was of such vast significance to me, that I couldn’t let another week to go by. It’s not very often that we get an extreme media blitz on the topic of single malts. This week’s press release on a specialized finishing taking place in Germany drove so much media buzz I had to address it. I want to focus on finishing and help you understand what it is. Then we will go back and review this novelty that’s taking place in Germany.

  • Differences Between Plastic and Premium Vodka

What is Vodka? To understand what vodka is, we need to first understand distillation. The basic idea of distillation is to take a beer or wine; something with an alcohol, and boil it until the ethanol turns into a steam vapor. In a pot still (the least efficient way of distilling) this vapor will travel up the still and once at the top cascades down a side pipe (line arm) this piping is then cooled by a cold water on the outside of the metal causing the vapor inside the pipe to condense back into alcohol.

  • A Trace of the Future

National Bourbon Heritage Month is a wonderful time of year to discuss the products that I passionately enjoy. I have been yearning to review Buffalo Trace‘s Experimental Collection for many years and I recently received a sample so the timing worked out perfectly for a RSVLTS.com liquor review this week. The Experimental Collection has been an ongoing subcategory for the Buffalo Trace distillery for 6 years. Out of the countless Kentucky Bourbons available on the market, you may be wondering why I decided to choose this brand.

  • Oktoberfest 2012: Opening Weekend [95 High Quality Photos]

Oktoberfest kicked off on September 22nd and an estimated 80 million beers are expected to be downed over the course of the 16-day festival that wraps up October 7th. Considered to be the world’s largest fair, nearly 6 million people from all over the world attend the festival. The events are held on a 75 acre fairground called the “Wiesn” that can accommodate hundreds of thousands of people at a time. On Saturday, Munich’s mayor tapped the first keg to kick off the 16-day Oktoberfest, known for its oompah music and traditional costumes. With only two blows of his hammer and a cry of “O’zapft is” — “It’s Tapped” — Mayor Christian Ude inserted the tap into the first keg, opening the 179th Oktoberfest to the cheering of thousands who were waiting to be served their first beer. Only beer brewed within the city limits of Munich, and conforming to strict specifications, is allowed to be sold at the Oktoberfest. The special brand of Oktoberfest Beer is a registered trademark. Although heavy rains soaked the fairground revelers didn’t seem to mind. If you can’t make it out to this year’s festival we’ve got you covered. Here are photos from the more »

  • Redrawing The Lines For Scotch

Scotch is broken into five regional parts; the reason why we have 5 regional areas in Scotland is due to distilleries wanting to cut an imaginary slice of the Scottish landscape for marketing purposes and individuality. Whiskey is a term, not a style. Whiskey covers a broad range of spirits, including Scotch. Scotch is a kind of Whiskey. Trust me when you go to a bar and order a whiskey, your bartender has already figured out that you have no idea what you are actually drinking. The Fundamentals of Whiskey – Scotch has to be made in Scotland to be called Scotch. Single malts are a liquid product that is made at one distillery. Scotch has to be made of 100% malted barley. Okay, I believe that just covers the easy stuff now into the reason why you’re reading this article.

  • Practical Guide to White Whiskey

When people talk about white dog whiskey the first thing that comes to mind for many of us is the image of banjos and NASCAR. I think it’s a foolish presumption because white whiskey is the predecessor to all -age spirits. Today legal white whiskey is being produced on an influx and many consumers don’t understand if it’s a novelty item or where it’s purpose in the spirits industry lies. Wood aging any product will cause it to mellow out from the char inside the barrel the same way a Brita filters water. This process takes away the natural flavor of the product and inserts the wood flavor. There is no real issue with consuming an aged product because it’s extremely enjoyable to spit Bourbon, aged tequila or dark rum. The real use for white whiskey is the substitute of vodka in any mixed drink. Vodka doesn’t contain any oil conquers because of the effectiveness of the column stills that it’s made in. Other spirits such as whiskey, rum, and tequila are still produced in pot stills for the most part. Pot stills strip out congeners from the product. Oil congeners in white whiskey hold any flavor you add to more »

If you’ve ever gone into your local liquor store in the hope of creating a custom 6 pack of craft beers to give your fridge some variety, you’ve no doubt run into some issues. These issues include the fact that you’re provided with beat up old cardboard holsters that either a) Were meant for four beers or b) Are so banged up, your brewskies could fall out the bottom at any second. Made from laser cut plywood, the DIY-esque alcohol holster comes with a few screws and nuts for you to assemble all the pieces. • The Terminator (Drink Infographic)

We dubbed this drink The Terminator for 2 specific reasons; today is National Rum Day, so we wanted to create a drink that embodied the last relaxing bit of summer we have left. Ingredients that would be as refreshing  alone as they would be together. After doing some research, we stumbled upon a mixologist who would make these for him and his colleagues after a long night tending behind the bar. According to BACARDI mixologist, David Cordoba, “This Rum ‘n’ Coke Float is the classic barman’s reward. At the end of a long night mixing drinks at the Tonic Bar in Edinburgh, David and his colleagues would kick back with this luxurious treat made with BACARDI® Superior Rum, Coke and a healthy dollop of vanilla ice cream.” The perfect end all summertime BBQ/rooftop/patio, F*ck winter cocktail. Being that it’s Roosevelt of the Year nominee, James Cameron’s, birthday, we named it after one of his most acclaimed movies. The Terminator is easy to make, and easy going down, but after a few, just like Arnold, it will search and destroy you. Having a pillow or hammock within reaching distance is strongly recommended.

  • Nothing Says Summer Fun Like A NYC Rooftop Pool Party [15 HD Photos]

On Wednesday Microsoft and Maxim co-hosted a Back To School event on the roof top of Gansevoort Park Avenue Hotel in New York City. We got to demo the new Windows 8 exclusive app Cocktail Flow, shot a sweet video with the Bleacher Report guys and some photobombing fun with Maxim’s Maximum Exposure host April Rose. Once the drinks stopped flowing at 10 pm we walked across the street to Tavern 29 for an impromptu after-party with Colin, April, Jessica, Brookelyn and the rest of the Maxim crew. Tavern 29 had a drink on the menu called “The Roosevelt” which was absolutely atrocious so we took it upon ourselves to reinvent the drink, see the recipe below. After a delicious round of 14 Roosevelts for the crew we called it a night. Since I was the Mayor of Blackoutville by 8:30 I don’t remember too much of what happened but good thing I shot a bunch of photos using the HTC Titan II! Here are photos from the madness that was Microsoft and Maxim’s Back To School party!
