  • The Powerful Paradox of Peat

Last night, I had the enjoyment of tasting a flight of Ardbeg single malt scotch whiskeys. It was the full range of whiskeys that are available to the public in the United States right now. This great tasting experience got me thinking about the consumer and their understanding of peat. Many of us at one time or another have tried a Scotch that was very smokey. This smokey effect is the cause of dried and compacted vegetation known as peat. Peat is the precursor to coal; due to very hard limestone bedrock in Ireland and Scotland compacted vegetation is unable to make its transformation into coal. From its earliest beginnings peat was cut from bogs and the logs were dried and used in homes as a fire source instead of coal. As a heating source peat has the wonderful effect of burning for a long time with only the residual effect of a pungent aromatic smoke that clings on to everything in its immediate vicinity. This method of heating was commonplace until the expansion of gas and coal in the main land of Scotland and urban areas in Ireland. For islands like Islay (pronounced eye-la) peat was the only heating source available. more »

  • RSVLTS Tequila Review: Piedra Azul

The sound of mariachi bands playing in the background, the cool breeze of the Pacific Ocean, and the vineyard-like landscapes of Jalisco, Mexico are home to tequila. This tiny slice of heaven is home to more than 100 distilleries making over 900 unique brands of tequila. With a new brand popping up each week I have had the privilege of tasting many different varieties of tequila. Today, I’m doing a review of the Piedra Azul made at La Madrilena in Tototlan. I knew before I popped the top of the bottle that this tequila had a strong pedigree. The distillery, La Madrilena is famous for producing Xicote, one of the rarest and most floral tequilas I have ever had. The factory where Piedra Azul is made was built in 1911 by Don Pedro Velasco; knowing about its rich heritage and pedigree gave me my first two clues about this brand. First, it’s a less expensive counterpart to Xicote which may cause quality may be lacking. However, the difference that even a small aspect can make in the taste of tequila can be very difficult to explain to a general consumer. I always ask representatives from distilleries two simple questions about the production more »

  • Armageddon: World’s Strongest Beer Is Stronger Than Whiskey

Appropriately named Armageddon, the new beer from Scotland’s Brewmeister Brewery will probably end your days if you drink too much of it. The potent concoction has an alcohol content of 65% by volume. That’s stronger than vodka or whiskey. Although the Guinness Book of Records has yet to certify Armageddon as the world’s strongest beer, that hasn’t stopped Brewmeister from slapping the unofficial title on the label. And who can blame them, after all, that’s what makes their drink so special. Company co-founder, Lewis Shand says Armageddon “is closer to a liquor than a beer, but it is classified as a beer and we are pleased with it.” He added that “it delivers a supersonic-charged explosion and delivers the drinker to Drunksville”. That’s probably why Brewmeister’s brewers have cautioned that the beer should be sipped and served in small doses. In comparison, here is the alcohol content for other popular drinks: a Budweiser 5%, a glass of wine 12%, a glass of whiskey 40%. The 65% alcohol beer is not sold in the USA, but you can order it from the Brewmesiter website, for $50 a bottle. The now second world’s strongest beer was made by BrewDog, also from Scotland, more »
