The Roosevelts recently demonstrated how poorly the BCS system would have fared in selecting the Super Bowl participants over the past decade. On Monday we discovered it did even worse with the World Series. Today, we look at how different the NBA Finals would have been under a BCS system. We again uses ESPN’s Power Rankings as our BCS substitute, and select the highest rated team at the end of the regular season from each conference. The highlights and full results from the past 9 years (the NBA Power Rankings only go back to 2004) are below. The actual NBA champion made the BCS NBA Finals 3 times (2009 Lakers, 2008 Celtics, 2004 Pistons). The system correctly picked 1 NBA Finals matchup (2008 Lakers vs. Celtics) The system correctly selected only 5 out of 18 actual NBA Finals participants. The Bulls are the biggest winner, increasing their Finals appearances from 0 to 3, and Suns are close behind, increasing from 0 to 2. Other notable winners include the Cavs, Pistons, and Spurs who all gain an additional appearance. The Heat are the biggest losers by far, failing to make any to make any NBA Finals under a BCS system. The Magic and Thunder more »

The Carrier Classic on Veterans Day, with the unique calendar date 11-11-11, was a watershed event in college basketball. Now it has become a full-blown trend. Florida will play Georgetown on a ship Nov. 9 off the coast of Jacksonville, Fla. The U.S. Navy has told the two schools that it is fully supportive of the game, much as it was with the Carrier Classic last year. The Florida-Georgetown matchup is the third game scheduled to be played on a naval ship Nov. 9, college basketball’s opening day. All three involve a Big East team. Marquette will play Ohio State on a ship off the coast of Charleston, S.C., and Syracuse will take on San Diego State on the flight deck of a retired ship, the USS Midway, off the coast of San Diego. It is not clear if the Florida-Georgetown or Marquette-Ohio State games will be played on active ships. Television commitments for the three games haven’t been made at this point. Last year’s Carrier Classic was a test to see if such a spectacle could work, and the event was deemed a success. [Source]

Here’s a ridiculous set of graphs from the NY Times on the shooting patterns of NBA championship contenders Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder as well as the individual starting players. Apparently everyone stinks at 3s from the left corner except Shane Battier who’s on fire there and Dwayne Wade who just stinks from the entire arch. See: Where the Heat and the Thunder Hit Their Shots

Magic. Bird. Jordan. Legends at every position on the floor. Hall of Famers filling the bench. They were the greatest team ever assembled—in any sport—and twenty years ago in Barcelona, they put on a show the world will never forget.

[NBC Miami] Dejected and down after a devastating loss Tuesday night, the Miami Heat players slowly trudged down the tunnel toward their locker room. But one young fan heard on the game broadcast was sincerely trying to pep up LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and the rest of the team. “Good effort, good job! Good job, good effort!” The face behind that voice is 9-year-old Jack Meyer.

If Blake wasn’t 6 when NBA JAM came out, I’d say this is straight from the game. Either way this is a tremendous job by SB Nation on replicating the pinnacle of my childhood in modern times. This video is on fire! If you watch it 3 times in a row, your computer explodes. Fact. (H/T) SB Nation

Pepsi Max took Kyrie Irving to a pick up basketball game in Bloomfield, NJ, disguised him as an old man named “Uncle Drew”, and had him teach some youngbloods how the old school does things. After watching a couple times, it seems a bit set up, but still a hilarious video to watch and Kyrie actually does a pretty convincing job of playing an old man.

Orlando Magic management told Stan Van Gundy Dwight Howard wants him fired. During the interview Dwight comes through and gives coach a hug, probably unaware that the team told Stan about his little secret.

On this day 30 years ago a star was born. 19 year-old Freshman guard, Michael Jordan hit the go ahead and eventual game winning shot to beat a dominant Georgetown team led by future fellow Dream Teamer Patrick Ewing to win the 1982 NCAA Championship. Interesting fact: If you look closely you see Jordan wearing a pair of baby blue Converse shoes. They were the shoe sponsor for UNC at the time, little did everyone know that Jordan would help lead Nike to become one of the most well-known companies on Earth. Here is an excerpt from a 1982 recap in Sports Illustrated: Jordan, as ice-bucket cool as a 6’5″ freshman could be, had already contributed six baskets and nine rebounds. Now with 18 seconds to go, Jordan caught Black’s pass in front of the Carolina bench. He was all alone. It was a play designed for him. He was right where he had imagined he would be on the bus ride over from the hotel, with the ball—and the game—in his hands. “I didn’t see it go in,” he said. “I didn’t look at the ball at all. I just prayed.” String music, choir. Watch the video – skip to 1:35

Sports Nation polled 340,000 viewers and the overwhelming majority agreed that Kentucky would win the tourney. This is good news for my bracket as I am currently in the lead and I have the Wildcats going all the way.

Even thought his team was getting smoked by 13 points to Kentucky this esthetic fan took advantage of his time on air. Possibly the best fan dance moves we’ve seen all year. Deadspin has a video too if you want to see how it all went down.

Over the past few years, big brands have been featuring viral videos of professional sports figures accomplishing astounding feats during “down time” on a commercial set or just practicing their trade. Dwight Howard madness is heating a fever pitch. Will he stay or will he go? Plenty of people hitting the gym a few times a week have Dwight Howard shoulder envy. Its a real thing, look it up. We contacted Evan Haupt, resident shred master at NYSC Hoboken North to give me some tips on how to get my shoulders looking like Superman. Editor note: Today, August 14th, is Magic Johnson’s 53rd birthday. Let’s take a look back at some of his best photos. ESPN films aired their special documentary on Magic Johnson called “The Announcement.” The film displayed Magic’s incredible work on and off the court, as well as the tremendous job he has done to create awareness for the HIV/AIDS community. Since his high school days Magic has always been the center of attention so we scoured the web and curated 50 rarely seen photos of Magic Johnson. We tried to keep it an even split between photos of Magic on the court and him being a normal guy. The photos range from his high school days up into his time with the Lakers.
