  • A New Yorkers Guide To Attending The Belmont Stakes

A few of us were talking last night about going to the Belmont Stakes next Saturday (June 9th) for the chance to witness the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 – I totally just jinxed it by talking about it.  Tickets can be purchased the day of at the track for $10.  For those of you who live in and around New York City the ride to Belmont takes only 30 minutes on the LIRR from Penn Station (see the schedule/info here).  Races start around noon with the big race going off around 6 pm. If you want to plan a good day with your friends your goal should be to take the 12:36 pm train out of Penn Station and get there at 1:10 pm. Although you can’t BYOB anymore (it was recently banned) but you can booze on the train and buy beer at the track. A crowd of 100-120,ooo is expected so again, if you’re looking for one of the incredibly monumental events you’ll be talking about with friends for decades to come this is it.

  • Epic Paintball Battle For The Ages

Remember when you were a kid and played cops and robbers, capture the flag or manhunt. This is exactly like that but with paintball, 20+ years later and on more steroids than the east coast of New Jersey in the summer. Your 6 year old self would be proud of this.

  • First Successful Wingsuit Landing Without a Parachute [18 High Quality Photos]

Gary Connery (most likely related to Sean) just set a world record for landing in a wingsuit without a parachute and for also having the largest pair of metaphorical balls on the planet. The Wingsuit jump had to be done at precision pace and accuracy to land on his target of cardboard boxes. After completing the jump, Gary walked into a pub and broke Chuck Norris’ jaw with a wince. You may have seen the video last week but here are a few pictures that show just how crazy the feat was.

Tom Brady’s Wicked Accent from Tom Brady Here is UnderArmour’s latest commercial from Funny or Die. A little known fact: Tom Brady is NOT from Boston. He’s also a pretty good quarterback.

  • Justin Verlander Brought Some Serious Heat To The Game Yesterday

I have some beef with the Detroit Tigers. Their All-Star calibre team needs to start getting Justin Verlander some run support. It’s getting ridiculous. Verlander is in the prime of his career and has the stuff that makes him capable of throwing a no-hitter each time he steps ont he mound. Just look at this highlight reel of Verlander from the 8th inning of yesterday’s game against the Indians where he topped out at 102 MPH and peppered in a few vicious 82 MPH curve balls.  Verlander pitched a complete game, let up two runs, struck out 7 in a losing effort. Clearly his 5-2 record does not properly reflect his current level of play. He actually might just need to throw a no-hitter each game to reach 20 wins this season. Put him on a team that can actually score runs like the Rangers or Cardinals and Verlander would go 34-0 this year.

  • Boomshakalaka! Blake Griffin NBA Jammin’

If Blake wasn’t 6 when NBA JAM came out, I’d say this is straight from the game. Either way this is a tremendous job by SB Nation on replicating the pinnacle of my childhood in modern times. This video is on fire! If you watch it 3 times in a row, your computer explodes. Fact. (H/T) SB Nation

  • Facebook Pages for 90′s Fictional Sports Heroes

If only Facebook, or better yet the internet was around for the early 90′s, when feel-good kids sports movies were king, and CGI-alien-robot-apocalypse saturated blockbusters were kept in comic books and board games. To pay homage to the athletic prowess of fictional 90′s sports stars, we’ve created renditions of what their Facebook timelines would have looked like, fully equipped with the creepily accurate Facebook ads. Roberta Mancino just about every guy’s dream women. She is an Italian skydiver, BASE jumper, wingsuit flyer and international model, has participated in more than 7,000 skydives (including four skydives while completely naked), and on five occasions her parachute did not open in mid-jump but she figured it out. Here is Mancino with Mark Healy, a world renowned free diver as they float around the ocean without the help of oxygen tanks. Basically, to seek thrills these two hold their breathe for a really long time and do risky dives like swimming with sharks and exploring sunken ships.

  • Time Lapse Video Of The Staples Center’s Epic Weekend

Over a four-day span, Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles hosted six sporting events, each requiring its own changeover. What transpired from Thursday to Sunday, when the Los Angeles Kings (NHL), Clippers (NBA) and Lakers (NBA) played a total of six games in 72 hours is an unprecedented string of events for a single arena to host. Here is a time-lapse vide of the entire weekend showing the switch from ice to basketball taking approximately 2 hours, 15 minutes; from one basketball court to another taking about 90 minutes. In all, more than 110,000 fans poured in and out of Staples (assuming some didn’t hide out in a bathroom between games). [source]

  • Earliest Known Babe Ruth Game-Worn Jersey Shatterers Memorabilia Auction Record [9 High Quality Photos]

How much would you pay for your favorite piece of memorabilia. This weekend  it was announced that someone with very deep pockets shelled out a record price for the earliest known Babe Ruth game worn jersey. SCP Auctions, based in California, said the circa 1920 New York Yankees uniform top worn shortly after he was sold to the Yankees by the Boston Red Sox for $100,000 following the 1919 season fetched $4,415,658 at the company’s April auction, which ended Sunday. This far exceeded the $2 million pre auction estimate. That price broke the previous record of $4,338,500 set in 2010 for James Naismith’s founding rules of basketball. Below you can see the description of the auction from SCP and several high quality photos of the jersey. Once you are done check out this awesome photo set of Babe Ruth from his playing days with the Boston Red Sox. In a time when baseball, reeling from the 1919 Black Sox scandal, declining attendance and declining credibility, needed a revitalization, Babe Ruth saved the day. By destiny’s hand, the most visible, dominating, and popular athlete in American history was brought to New York City to play on baseball’s biggest stage. At the dawn of the more »

  • Scenes From Mothers Day Around Major League Baseball [34 High Quality Photos]

Major League Baseball honored Mother’s across America yesterday with the annual tradition that sees players using pink bats, pink arm bands, even the bases and line-up cards are pink. Many of this equipment is auctioned off after the game to raise money for breast cancer research. Mother’s Day seemed to produce a flair for the dramatic this year, with the Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton and the Reds’ Joey Votto both connected on walk-off grand slams Sunday, marking the first day with two walk-off slams since April 10, 1998, when Mo Vaughn of the Red Sox and the Padres’ Steve Finley accomplished the feat. The St. Louis Cardinals also made a nice gesture to Chipper Jones, which you can see below. All in all it was a great day and if you couldn’t make it to the ballpark because you were meeting up with Mom here are a few pictures from about MLB.

  • Grantland: Stephen Strasburg Is The Scariest Pitcher In Baseball

Earlier this week, ESPN SweetSpot writer David Schoenfield declared fully recovered White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy the game’s best hurler. Peavy’s comeback, from two-time ERA champ to desperately dangling limb and now back to a batter-baffling force, has been remarkable and was never a given. But as good as Peavy’s been, overwhelming hitters with his four-pitch repertoire, he isn’t a guy who haunts the nightmares of his opponents. Stephen Strasburg, well, he’s another story. • Josh Hamilton May Have Just Earned Himself A Plaque At Camden Yards

The Roosevelts should be dedicating this entire week to Texas Rangers’ slugger John Hamilton. Over the last three days “The Natural” has put on a show of Ruthian proportions in the hometown of the Great Bambino. Yesterday, following up on his mythic four home runs in a single game performance, he launched another home run off the B&O warehouse that was one of the furthest shots in Camden Yards history. Once the landing spot is calculated he will certainly receive a plaque like to ones in the video below.

The performance was similar to his memorable home run derby at Yankee Stadium and earned him a standing ovation from the visiting Baltimore Orioles crowd.
