Sure, there are plenty of awards for actors, directors, special effects artists and just about everyone who works on movies, but what about those unsung heroes? We’re talking about those little guys who get stomped on all day and when they are no longer of use, simply get tossed aside. We’re talking about sneakers. And here are 15 great sneaker moments in movie history that we would like to salute.
No one would ever accuse director Sofia Coppola of striving for accuracy with 2006’s Marie Antoinette, but the inclusion of blue Chuck Taylors (seen above at :28) in 18th century France was a little too out there for many viewers.
Like Mike taught kids that they could get magical basketball powers from an old pair of Nike Blazers. I once got athlete’s foot from an old pair of Rockports. No fair.
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
Never has the tedious act of tying one’s shoe been captured so perfectly as in Scott Pilgrim. Plus, this scene gave us a nice long look at those Adidas Originals.
Fast Times At Ridgemont High
Everyone wanted to be like Spicoli and the easiest way to start was with a pair of checkered Vans.
Did Scott get his awesome basketball abilities from his werewolf DNA or his shoes? It’s hard to tell, but those Adidas Tourneys certainly didn’t hurt.
Michael Jordan wore a few different pairs of Nikes in Space Jam, but it was the introduction of the Jordan XIs that we most remember from the movie.
Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia — aka Feech La Manna of The Sopranos — were great in this scene, but the real stars were those Nike Air Force IIs.
Back to the Future II
It took nearly 30 years for the self-lacing Nike Mags from Back to the Future II to actually be a reality, but Nike finally made some last year. Unfortunately, the release was limited and we still don’t have them although the technology is being used in other sneakers.
Chuck Taylors make a second appearance on the list in a very different movie. Converse All Stars: The shoes of French nobility and Italian Stallions!
Reebok finally released the “Alien Stompers” from Aliens for an “Alien Day” promotion in 2016… and they looked a lot better on Ripley.
When nude time traveler Kyle Reese goes back to 1984 to save humanity, only one pair of shoes will do: Nike Vandals.
We were so happy when Adidas finally released the Zissou Rom this summer. Then we realized they were only made available at a French music festival and were depressed all over again.
Tom Hanks returns to the list with another pair of Nikes. This time he wore a pair of Nike Cortez to run across the country from Alabama to the southwest. Why? He just felt like running!
Robin Hood: Men in Tights
As a kid, Robin Hood: Men in Tights was the funniest movie ever. Now I realize how bad it is compared to just about every other Mel Brooks flick, but at least there’s a dated Reebok Pump reference that may have been funny 25 years ago.
What ’90s kid didn’t want a pair of PF Flyers after watching Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez change into them to save the Babe Ruth-autographed baseball from the Beast? After all, they’re “guaranteed to make a kid run faster and jump higher.” Oh yeah, and we’ve got them for sale in the RSVLT Store.
