245,000 Wreaths Placed At Gravesites At Arlington National Cemetery [18 Photos]

It all started in 1992, when Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Maine, worked with Senator Olympia Snowe to donate 5000 Christmas wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery, where they were placed in an older section of the cemetery that didn’t see many visitors. The wreath-laying became an annual tradition but mostly went unnoticed by the media and a majority of the public until a photo of the wreath-laden cemetery went viral on the internet in 2005. Wreaths Across America was born.

On December 16, 2017, the tradition continued as 1.2 million wreaths were laid at the grave sites of service members across the country in 1,238 locations — including 245,000 wreaths where it all began at Arlington National Cemetery.
