We got a chance to chat with Justin before the launch of this epic collection and we picked his brain about his connection to RSVLTS, his love of all things spooky season and the inspiration behind the designs for the third course of the Justin Warner x RSVLTS smorgasbord. Check out the answers from the man himself below!
This isn’t your first rodeo with RSVLTS, how did you first hear about the brand?
I was a crusty T-shirt chef for the longest time. Pretty sure the stars aligned as I saw an ad online for that hot pink palm frond jam whose name I can never remember-- maybe coconut grove? It sounds like a Mario Kart track... Anyway I did a little research to make sure I wasn't a poorly informed consumer. It all looked fire so I pulled the trigger.
A wardrobe stylist for Guy's Ranch Kitchen selected that shirt for our Brunch Tailgate episode.. I was in the back and Guy Fieri shouted "with a shirt like that what kind of game are you going to Warner?" Or something like that.. and I chirped back "a video game" .. it was history from there.
This is your third badass series release with the brand, tell us a bit more about this collection in particular?
When my wife created Cowju as mascot of our ramen shop, I knew it would be something special. I have an overactive imagination so I'm always spinning yarns in my head about whatever I currently fancy. It could be Man vs. Cowju, it could be a mecha-Teddy Roosevelt, Nature's Final Protector, or it could be a musing on the green, gnarled and charred plant-based shrunken heads we call shishito peppers. This is just another slice of the brain for those who dig it. I mean that as spookily as possible.
Speaking of the season…are you personally a big fan of “spooky season” or are you more of a “Halloween” guy?
I have always been a huge Halloween guy. As a kid I got pretty good at making fake scars and scabs for my friends. I have also always loved fall. It's the time and temperature in which I would rest eternally if given the option. But.. since this is my son's first notable spooky season I am leaning in extremely hard the second I get back from shooting an undisclosed and hyper hype food project.
What’s your favorite spooky/Halloween movie?
I love zombies. 28 Days Later is a masterpiece. But above all I think GeGeGe no Kitaro is *the vibe* for a palatable amount of spooky year round. Yokai are dope.
What’s your favorite seasonal food/beverage?
Pecan pie. Spicy pumpkin beer.
Any chance of something similar appearing on Bokujo’s menu?
I once made a sweet bread made out of sweetbreads shaped like a mouldering corpse, served in a small casket. It was delicious and terrifying. There's definitely a Dr. Warner/Chef Hyde in me but I try to keep that part of me separate. In a small jar, delicately preserved, on my desk.
In addition to your incredible RSVLTS collection launch, let the fans all know what you have coming up next in the world of Justin Warner?
More. More. MORE! *Maniacal laughter*
