Originally published in the 1719 book “Fishes, crayfish, and crabs, of diverse colors and extraordinary figures, which are found around the Moluccas Islands, and on the coasts of the Southern Lands” – colloquially known as “Fantastical Fish” (thank goodness) – it’s an underwater time capsule that brings us back to a moment in history when the world was still filled with wonder, and paintbrushes told the tale. Even if the artist took a few “fantastical” liberties.
